I am planning to run my first half-marathon in a few months and am comparing training plans. I have successfully used Hal Higdon’s 10K plan (the novice one) and am looking at a couple of his Half-Marathon plans as well as some other plans I’ve found online. I’d like to know more about Danny’s plans before I make a decision. His programs are a bit pricey, and I’m willing to pay that, but it would be helpful to know more about exactly what I would be getting. I know the Beginner plan has you running 4 days a week and the Intermediate has you doing 5 days a week, but other than that I’m curious about the following:
- what would be the average mileage in the first week in one plan versus the other?
- is cross-training involved? (for my 10K plan, I’ve been cross-training with walking 2 days a week)
- is strength-training involved?
- what about speed work and/or tempo runs?
I’m currently trying to decide between doing one of the plans I already know (probably Hal Higdon’s Novice 2) using Chi Running forms and focuses (obviously!) *or* buying one of Danny’s plans (would be leaning towards Intermediate but don’t have enough information to know). It’s hard to spend $35 sight unseen without knowing at least a few of the details above. I’m also wondering if the Chi information in his training program differs significantly from the regular Chi Running book.
Can anyone who has used either of his Half programs give their thoughts?
