I’m after some advice regarding foot problems I’ve started having recently - but some history:
I bought the chi running book a couple of years ago after picking up knee injuries during triathlon training. I took a few months off all training & then started from scratch using what I’ve come to call MafferChi - a combination of Phil Maffertone’s low heart rate training & Danny’s Chi Running technique in minimal shoes (Lems). I have osteoporosis related to Coeliac disease and have been on drugs for this for 5 years with no change in my bone density. I’m a 47 year old male in the UK.
I loved the results of the MafferChi combination and have been running like this ever since, gradually building to ultra distance runs - 34 miles so far and an iron distance triathlon in Scotland this June with minimal soreness.
I’ve recently started to have severe problems with joint soreness - particularly the tarso- metatarsal joints on either foot following longer runs. I’m typically fine during runs of 6 miles or so but can hardly walk the following day. Taking 2 to 3 week breaks has not really helped & I’ve now had to pull out of the 50 miler I was entered into in October.
My doc has referred me to a rheumatologist and I’m getting varying views depending on who I see from “you shouldn’t be running at all” to “we should be able to sort you out”.
I’m wondering if I should shell out for something like Hokas (though this goes totally against what seems sensible to me) give up running altogether or whether there are other things that could help - like anti- inflammatory diet?
Any ideas? I’m all ears!
