Marathon after half marathon

I posted this in the marathon forum but no one has answered—perhaps someone in this group has some insight?

I am currently using the 16 week half marathon program for a race May 26. First two weeks of July I’m going on a two week hike, the Tour du Mont Blanc, which will be 7-10 miles a day of ascents and descents, so I will need to break in my boots and train for that in June. I’m signed up for my first marathon October 6. I want to use the chi running training program, but when I return I’ll only have 12 weeks to train, not 20. Given how much I’ve been training, and that I will still be training, just working in hiking (only 2 weeks will be run-free 100% hiking) do you think it will be doable to start the marathon program midway through? What week would you suggest I begin on when I get back, and would you recommend skipping particular weeks to get back on schedule with long runs and speed work?

VO2 Max Test?

Have any of you ever had a VO2 Max Test done? If so, did you train ahead of time for it and for how long? Any tips on preparing for this test would be appreciated. If there’s things you can do when not biking/running please let me know that, too. This is for a bicycle VO2, not a treadmill. That’s just how this particular facility does it.

I have been using a metronome on every run and I am at 185 steps per minute which feels comfortable for me but the issue I have is my pace is pretty good at 9-9:30 min mile.Sometimes I want to go slower especially for longer runs but how do I do that with 185 steps per min?
should I be lowering the cadence a little?

thank you
Metatarsal and knee pain

Hi to everyone and thank you in advance for your answers.
I am training for a marathon (that I have planned in the mid June). Since a month I increased and concentrated my mileage in long runs. Currently, I run twice 30km. After my first 30km (flat on asphalt) I had pain on my lateral left knee, and after a day, a little bit of discomfort on the metatarsal zone corresponding to the big toe (of the right foot) and inside the left knee (corresponding to the medial meniscus). During my second run (27km, half on asphalt, half on trail), I experienced no pain on the lateral part of left knee, but some hours after a discomfort on the on the metatarsal zone corresponding to the big toe and inside the left knee (corresponding to the medial meniscus), as before. This last two days. My first question is the following: is it normal to have a little bit of pain after a run of 27/30km or it is question of adapting my body to longer distances? My second question is: in the case my discomfort is caused by bad form in running, is that possible that is owed to the fact that my feet might splay out while I am running? What I found in Chi marathon (p. 59) and in Chi running book (p. 231) could point in this direction, because the pain caused by spaying out the feet is localized in those three areas. However I checked my form and I have the impression that my feet splay out in the suspension phase but they point forward while landing (I land first with the outer part of my midfoot and than with all foot). In the case this could be a problem do you have any advice?
Thank you for your answers.

Achilles complaints

Hi. I’m thoroughly enjoying what I’m learning through ChiRunning. However, I have a tenacious Achilles injury that doesn’t seem to want to go away. I’m receiving physiotherapy treatments for it, and I’m doing some prescribed exercises to strengthen my calves, such as heel lifts. I’m reduced down to 3 runs of 5K each, which is not the distance that I find satisfying. I frequently ice, too. But, it persists.

If there is more information that someone could provide that could help me through this very discouraging problem, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

Marathon Sub 3.05

Hi
I’m 27 years old and I’ve run 2 marathon last year. I run the first one in paris in 3:08 in April and the second in Lowell (MA) in 3:12 in October. In both cases I started fast (probably too much) and at about 30th kilometer I hit the wall and the last 10km I struggled, slowed down consistently (in the second marathon I also cramped towards the end). I’m planning to run another marathon in the fall if this year and I’d like to aim to break 3:05 (and ideally 3:00).
Do you think it’s possible? What kind of training would you recommend to overcome this problem in the last part? Maybe it is also related to nutrition before and during the marathon?

Thanks

I’m new to the ChiRunning, but have ran off and on my adult life! I had the privilege of living in Hawaii because my husband was stationed there in the USMC. My running was at an all time high with triathlons 5k’s, 10k’s and a half marathon. Unfortunately my body wasn’t very happy .... almost a year of suffering with Plantars and after moving to VA painful hip bursitis.

I put running on hold for a year (After signing up for the Marine Corps Marathon and having to not run it…) to give my poor hip a break. Now I’m back to running after reading the ChiRunning and I was doing fantastic!! Until….I ran 4 miles last week and surprise my bursitis came back again. Up until then I was feeling great!

Does anyone have any helpful suggestions on how to make this better?? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

New to chirunning and I am enjoying it so far, thank you!

I have one trouble though!

I tend to get quite bad knee pain on the left side if my left knee which ends up causing some minor swelling.

My run yesterday had me feeling no pain at all, however after running again today, the pain returned. I’m thinking it has to be something to do with my form?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
