JANE TSE, MASTER INSTRUCTOR AND REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF HONG KONG/CHINA
A Canadian Chinese brought up in Hong Kong, Jane worked in the fields of training consultant and project management for over 20 years. ChiRunning found Jane through through a close friend who was amazed by the concept of using Chi in running. She read the ChiRunning book and started practicing by herself, and noticed there was something profound in the technique and decided to learn it from the masters.
ChiRunning’s effortless running concept has totally changed Jane's approach to body movement and training. After practicing ChiRunning, running injuries and long recovery time became history. Jane believes that combining her training profession with her passion for running is a gift to her life, and when she sees smiling faces on her students, she feels the energy and happiness radiating from within.
Tell us a little about you. Where you live, what your background is.
I am Canadian Chinese brought up in Hong Kong. By profession, I worked in the fields of training consultant and project management for over 20 years.
How did you start running?
From preparing my physical strength to complete 100km hiking event for charity in 2003. From there, running has become my favorite past time. Later, I started racing and marathon training.
When and how did ChiRunning come into your life? (The short story.)
ChiRunning came across to me by a close friend who was amazed by the concept of using Chi in running. I read the ChiRunning book and started practicing by myself. I noticed there’s something profound in the technique and decided to learn it from the masters. Thereafter, I attended chirunning workshops and instructor workshop, assisted Danny in instructor workshops and advanced my technique through learning from other outstanding master instructors such as Mary Lindahl, Kari Wilkinson, Michal Artzi and Pruna-Samarpan Querhammer.
In what ways has Chi changed your perception of and success in running?
ChiRunning’s effortless running concept has totally changed my approach to body movement and training. After practicing ChiRunning, running injuries and long recovery time became history.
What do you think is the biggest misconception of ChiRunning?
Most people think ChiRunning is hard to learn which is not true.
What motivates you to run?
The level of joy. When I run, I see smiling faces on my students, I feel the energy and happiness radiating from within.
What does your average week look like, run-wise?
I run two times a week with my running club plus leisure running with friends in non racing seasons. When preparing to race, I run or do cross training about five times a week.
What other forms of exercise do you practice to complement ChiRunning?
Many other sports are complementary as well as fun, such as yoga, swimming and weight training.
What led you to become an instructor?
Combining my training profession with my passion for running is a gift to my life.
What do you most enjoy about instructing?
The most enjoyable thing is to help clients to tap into their potentials and see them being able to reach out to more possibilities and achieve higher goals.
Advice for people new to ChiRunning?
Make it simple, play it hard, try out the form focuses like a child. Discover, discover, discover!
Favorite race you’ve run and why:
Definitely is the Crufu Run in Taiwan! It is a 220K Ride and Run Relay with a closing time of 26 hours. The race is open four times a year in four districts in Taiwan. We ran the four races and literally ran around the Taiwan island once! It is a race both entertaining and challenging as we need to train hard, exercise good judgment, foster teamwork and maintain exceptional stamina within the time limit!
Most memorable race:
The inaugural Kyoto Marathon in 2013 was the most memorable race for it is part of the support program to support the Great East Japan Earthquake and also during that race, I was taking pictures for and running with over twenty visually impaired runners along the course. “Thank you! I never had anyone take photos for me, not even my parents.” One of the runners said this when I put the memory stick in his hand. We helped him to upload the photos to his Facebook to share with other people the amazing thing that he did.
Ideal weather for running:
Ideal weather? Running in drizzles in early Spring!
Focus that currently dominates your running:
Breathing and relaxation, what else!
Favorite place to run:
Smell of trees and ocean tides, I love to run in conservation parks and along harbor-front promenades.
Run in London Marathon in 2017 and bring more students to overseas marathons.
Run with or without phone/music:
Depends. If I am bringing my phone, it is mainly for taking photos. Running with music helps me relax and sometimes even boost performance. However, if I need to be very focused in the running session, I would not bring any excessive gear.
If I didn’t run, I would not have fulfilled my dream of doing what I love: combining my career with my passion.
My first race was Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon in 2004.
My current favorite shoe to run in is Brooks Hyperion and Pure Connect.
My most difficult run ever was CCC (Courmayeur, Champed Lac, Chamonix) of the UTMB Races series. Its 100K race course stretches across, Italy, Switzerland and France.
